Spin it round.

Thanks for the advice on chopping boards and centre stands everyone.
In the end the issue is height (lifting the bike into the stand) and friction.
I found some flexable 2mm chopping boards at a bargin store (4 for $4), but the stand started to chew through. What did work was putting a scrap of laminex (from a bathroom reno) upside down on the board to reduce friction so its spins on the centre stand, while only being about 5 mm higher to lift the stand.
It's not pretty, but it works a charm.
