Thunderbolt's Way

Has anyone ridden the section of Thunderbolt's Way recently from Tamworth to the turn off to Dungog?

Going that way in September and was wondering about the road conditions.

Any advice would be apreciated.

Sean

Hi Sean,
I don't know the road in from Tamworth to Thunderbolts. We have only every come in through Uralla and Walcha. We know Thunderbolts fairly well however (you would join Thunderbolts Way 26 Km before Nowendoc). From there to Gloucester it is a really nice ride although you will find the bitumen is pretty badly maintained in places and you need to take it fairly easy at times. From Gloucester to the Dungog turnoff you take the Bucketts Way which is a nice ride also.
Cheers

Tamworth to Nowendoc is mostly good road. The worst bit being the Port Stephens Cutting that climbs up to the high country, but from there on is good all sealed road.

Came though that way 2 weeks ago heading from Walcha to Gloucester then onto the Pacific Highway. There are some really rough sections at the cutting as it the road drops down into the valley and there are some roadworks near Gloucester but this is no reason not to enjoy Thunderbolts.  From Gloucester to the PHighway the road is pretty poor but the scenery is good.

Enjoy it, Thunderbolts is one awesome road!

If you are going through to Singleton from Gloucester be careful of the road surface after Dungog. Last time I was there (about 2 months ago) they had been patching the road and leaving lots of loose gravel on the corners.

Thanks guys, not sure which way we are getting to Sydney. Weather reports were looking favourable. Going to Dungog to put some into their economy after the bad year they have had. Good to help out others on our way to Canberra.       :like
