How annoying!... GPS failure
« on: September 04, 2015, 08:40:53 PM »
GPS died today. After returning home from a shopping trip to Warrnambool, I discovered that according to my TomTom Via 225, I am still at the western set of lights at Warrnambool! Most confuzzelating! Looks like Tri state meet will be a 'jump on and go, guess-where-to-turn' trip.

Isn't that the most fun way to do it (sometimes)?!

Going back to touring for several years during the 70's when there was no such beast as a GPS, every new town was an adventure. I don't think I will have any problems.

Kev, it may just need resetting . . Back to factory settings then updating again?

It is still on factory settings, Terry... it just cannot receive any sat connection... just blindly searching.

Battery out reboot?
Works for lots of things...

Might try that one, Bill.... hadn't thought of it. Will do it in the morning, too cold outside now.

Hmmm ... on inspection its a sealed unit, cannot remove battery. So, I will let the battery go flat overnight, and recharge in the morning.  More than one way to skin a cat, hey! :grin

According to the manual this is how to do a reset . . .

Device not starting In rare cases, your  TomTom Via  navigation  device may not start correctly or may stop responding  to  your  taps. First, check  that the battery is  properly charged.  To  charge  the battery,  connect  your device  to the car  charger. It can take  up  to 2  hours to  fully charge the battery.

If this does not solve the problem, you can reset the device. To do this, press and hold  the On/Off button for 15 seconds and release the  button when  your device begins  to restart.

Charging your device The battery in your TomTom  Via navigation device charges when you connect it to the car charger or to your  computer.

Manual available here . .

Slightly off topic, but many of these units with internal batteries can have the batteries replaced when they won't hold a charge, with a little bit of patience and the replacement battery from evilbay!

Hi Andrew, battery doesn't need replacing, it's only 2 years old and holds charge ok, it was just a fritz in the operating system at the time... I did a reset as per Stroppys post and its now working perfectly again.

Yep I saw that. Like most devices with an OS, they occasionally have a "Fritz" - a great saying too, by the way!

Many years ago I was advised to never turn the device off whilst its talking (especially if it's a female voice)  ++
I acknowledge hardworking Australians no matter who they are or where they come from. All those who have contributed to this wonderful country deserve an equal share of gratitude for their contributions. To single any group of individuals out for special homage only denigrates the rest of us.

Funniest thing about "THE VOICE!" that I encountered in my travels....Jan 2012.... heading east on the Capricorn Highway in Qld from Barcaldine, turned left at Emerald for Townsville, and "THE VOICE!" announced "Turn left, 602 Km!"

Well.... TYVM!.... nothing like them there advanced warnings about intersections ahead!  ;-*

I thought 56 km was a bit much on advanced warning.
Cheers,
