Planning the trip to get my ST
« on: September 10, 2015, 11:13:46 PM »
G'day All,

I've been getting the logistics together around planning the trip to pickup my new  :bl11 !

At the moment the plan looks like this:

Thursday17th, 20:30 flight from Avalon to Sydney, staying with friends in Marrickville.

Friday 18th, 08:30 Rex flight out to Armidale (NSW).  Staying with a nice couple near the Uni, will probably get a cab there and offload my camping gear, put my feet up and read a book until the seller knocks off work, around 15:00.  He'll pick me up and take me to his place in Guyra about half an hour away.  We'll sign some papers, I'll hand over a fistful of cash (  :'( ), jump on board and head back to Armidale to park it in the garage and load my gear up to head off in the morning.

Saturday 19th, probably around 07:00 I'll hit the road heading South.  My partner is in Kings Point (NSW), just South of Ulludulla, a good days drive away, but I've got a few campsites marked along the way as contingencies.  I've generally find I take it a bit easier and don't push myself as much when travelling by bike, so often only make 5-600K's a day (I can hear all you FR'ers scoffing already...) generally because that's about when my back and/or knees have had enough, HOWEVER, I'm hoping that I will gel beautifully with my new ST and will be able to happily sail the whole way into my partners loving arms in the one day.

Friday 25th, after spending the week relaxing at Kings Point, my partner and I will ride south, just a couple hours, and stay in a nice BnB for the night.  She'll probably get on a bus back home the next morning, and I'll continue South along the coast (never taken that road before), probably finding somewhere to camp a night, then on past Lakes Entrance, through Melbourne and back to Geelong ready for work on Monday.

I've been playing with SpotWalla and SWConnect on my iPhone.  Hopefully I can get that all working easily and work out how to share the live link.  I only have two, very mild concerns, one is getting all my riding & camping gear on the Rex flight (the weight isn't an issue, just the bulk, maybe I'll have to suit up and fly dressed like I'm expecting the plane to fall out of the sky?), the other, and this sounds ridiculous, considering what the trip is based around, but it's getting used to the ST.  I had a small play on one a couple years ago, I remember it being super comfortable and not really feeling the weight too much, I think just reading the facts, figures and specs too much over the past months I have myself paranoid about the weight.  My current ride sits around 230Kg's wet, more when loaded for touring, but that's a very unbalanced weight, I'm hoping the ST will balance it all out much more comfortably!  Besides, at the end of the day, it's all just about getting used to a new bike, no matter what its specs are.

So, other than the legs being done by aircraft, I'm open to suggestions as to the exact route...  I'd love to see some nice scenery, but for the initial run down to Kings Point, I guess I'm more concerned with getting there fairly directly on safe, mainly well maintained roads.  I don't fancy getting used to a new bike, as well as learning how it handles in less than stellar conditions... but still, I know I'll come across whatever I come across on the day.

I'll keep you all updated as it all goes along.  Hopefully I'll have a SpotWalla link to upload before too long too.

Cheers,

Steve

Sounds like a plan, Steve.
You will not notice the extra weight except in reverse parking uphill (which is not a good idea, anyway) I stepped off a Honda 900 (260 Kg) and straight onto the 1100 and found it easier to handle the ST, and I assure you, I am no spring chicken.

I just took a look at the map and 711 km if to go straight down the highway.  This is a similar distance, to what I did yesterday on the ST1300 loaded up with luggage for 2 weeks away. Because I'm traveling with a group with Harleys, we stopped 3 times and took our time with two one stops. My total traveling time was just under 12 hours and quite comfortable.

Today we are heading to Sydney via Thunderbolts Way, which we have had reports saying is a bit rough, so I'll let you know after today's ride. Then we are going down the highway.

There is Putty Rd from Singleton to Windsor, but I haven't been on it in over 15 years. I have been warned that the pockets rockets like to scream through there on a weekend so you have to be careful.

South of Sydney Total National Park is quite scenic and from memory had camping spots, but I believe you have to register. The roads were good driving roads although a bit narrow. At the southern end there is the road to Woollongong including Sea Cluff Bridge.

Enjoy the new STead.

Hey Steve, I also think it's a good plan, with lots of contingencies.   My experience is that 500-600km per day is a most appropriate daily distance for touring, and gives you plenty of time for sight-seeing, breaks and an early arrival to get settled and  :beer    .   Don't be concerned about the weight of the loaded bike.   The weight disappears once you get above walking pace, but watch where you park it, and certainly not with the nose downhill with no escape.   The bike has a lovely "planted" feel when on the highway.

Consider registering for our Rider Assistance Network (RAN), so that if you get into strife along the way, we can send out the cavalry.   Have a look at this thread.....   http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=4765.msg66167#msg66167   which explains what it's about.

I look forward to following your travels on SpotWalla, and meeting on the road somewhere, sometime.    :thumb

I agree with Kev, don't make the mistake of parking where you have to reverse uphill.....

I had been riding a total of 6 months on a 250 Virago when I bought the ST, flew Darwin to Sydney on the redeye and then rode back via Melbourne, Geelong and Adelaide.  I'm still on the ST nearly 9 years later and have no plans to get rid of it any time soon.

We caught the bus over to Bendigo from Adelaide and rode back home via Swan Hill and Mildura. Left work on Friday on my CX500 and went to work on Monday with an ST which was also the first time I had ridden with a pillion without getting used to the bike first.

Wendy, we must have got our bikes within a few weeks of each other; May 2006 for us.

I got mine in February 2006.  I did stop overnight in Holbrook between Sydney and Melbourne, didn't sleep on the redeye and I was exhausted.  Spent 3 days in Melbourne visiting my grandmother, overnighted with my uncle and aunt in Geelong then rode to Adelaide.  Stayed overnight with my brother there and picked up my Shadow trailer.  Spent the morning mucking round at motor reg getting permit for it etc. then on to Glendambo that day, Ti Tree next day, then home to Darwin on the last day.  It was a pretty big trip for a totally green rider, but I had a ball  :runyay :runyay

STeve I'd suggeST heading down the New England to get used to your new ST   The Putty Rd is a good road these days,, yes weekend pocket rockets but don't worry about them,, if you want to avoid the City SNARL and do use the Putty continue along the Northern Rd to Narrellan then on to Campbelltown  Appin and join the coaST  at Wollongong to head further south. Id you require a STop over I am in Picton,  and have a bed n shed etc . my ph is below in details if you need.  ++
Picton  if it doesn’t flood higher than previous times.

The New England Highway was good. Lots of nice bends and sweepers.

Two thumbs up for both of Gadget's suggestions. Definitely the new England Highway to Sydney and then down through the Royal National park to Wollongong. Then Wollongong to Goulburn via Robertson. Goulburn to Canberra. Canberra to Batemans Bay and then down the coast to Eden and across. Very scenic however not the quickest way home.

Fantastic, thanks for the tips, and encouragement! I imagine I'll end up taking the fairly direct route through Tamworth (just missed out visiting there last time I was that way about 8 years ago), down to Sydney, Woolongong, Berry (need to pick up a couple litres of Pines milk from the bakery), Nowra then to Ulludulla. Not the most inspiring route, I know, but having driven that in reverse on Sunday, I do enjoy the long sweeping bends and rolling hills. My partners folks live in Robertson and Bowral, so I'm sure we'll get plenty of time on more scenic roads throughout the week.

Thanks Pete, I saw the RAN thread when I first joined the forum, I'll re visit that and pop my details up before I set off.

Only two things still to sort out: how to pack my gear (riding & camping) so that it will fit within the fairly tight Rex luggage requirements... That's just a matter of me spreading out in the lounge and packing and re-packing 'till it looks right.

The other, is to work out how to get SpotWalla uploading automatically (via SWConnect).  I should probably start a new thread, but if anyone can give me a clue, that would be great! I had it running on a couple of our adventures last week (took my 4yo son up to the Sth Coast, so we did lots of fun things, dolphin cruise, bush walks etc), but I had to manually upload the tracks at the end of each day. I know it must be possibly to have it automatically track you (looking at others ride reports, surely they're not manually updating as they're riding along!), I must be blind to that option on the site though. Any hints?

So STeve did you decide on the Putty Rd. Its direct & great ride on an ST and you'll be confident in knowing its capability and STability,,,  New England> Muswellbrook> Bulga Putty Rd >Windsor,> The Northern Rd then Camden,Picton Rd to the Gong or head to Bowral.  ;-*
The Highway/freeway thru Sydney is boring but more direct.  :well
 Cant help with Spot,,  :fp
Have a safe trip either way   ++

Thanks Pete, I had seen those, read through them again and couldn't work it out... until I created a Trip, rather than just uploading my tracks... I've been testing it while running around of work this afternoon, it's all good!  Although, the 5 minute logs are make it wildly inaccurate for around town, fine for on the open road though I guess.

So... that just leaves one problem to contend with... Packing all my stuff!

State laws, why do they have to be different!!!

It's been a while since I was on a bike in NSW, since then Vic has become more of a nanny-state, we've all peeled non-factory stickers off of our helmets and hung out tinted visors up in the garden to scare birds off the tomatoes... at least we're still allowed to park on the footpath!

Could anyone give me a quick run down of the do's & don't's in nsw?  i.e., can I dust of my tinted visor? My nose hurts with sunnies, but I endure it for fear of copping a fine, so it would be nice to give the old schnoz a break, at least for half of the trip 'till I hit the border again!

G'day Johnny
I just had a proper look at the map (while waiting for my ReX flight to Armidale), I mustn't have looked at the Putty Rs properly before, it looks like an interesting route. Looks like there's been some dodgy weather up the Central Coast, I may consider that road if it's not too bad tomorrow though, looks like fun!

Thanks, I can't wait!

A couple quick things I should probably check into before setting off on the big adventure, tyre pressures, I've read 36psi in the front, and 42 in the rear, is that about right?

Also, fuel range, call me sceptical but I've never trusted fuel gauges on bikes! How far do you all usually get out of a tank when cruising? Can I safely stretch myself to 400K's before starting to look for a petrol station?

400 km on the 1100 is usually about when the fuel warning light comes on (about 4 litres remaining). It does vary a little depending on riding style etc. so around 350 plus is when I'd be going for fuel if riding solo.

Thanks, I'll be tracking the mileage carefully to see how the consumption is looking. I'm excited to be able to go further than 200K's between fill ups!
