Tyre Changing Equipment

I have been considering buying this bit of tyre changing kit . . $1050 on FleaBay.

Anyone had any experience with tyre changing gear . . Workshop, not on the road kits.

You obviously intend changing a lot of tyres!
At $25 per tyre, that's 42 tyre changes before you break even.  And you have to have the space to accommodate it.

What do they do for that price? I get charged $15 at our car tyre dealer and free if I get my tyres from there. Takes them about 10 mins.

Alan, Biggles, I have been thinking about all that and wonder why I am considering it at all, I hope in the end commonsense and the reality about how much/longer I can ride for to make it worhwhile.

My local motorcycle stealer charges $30 per tyre and that is me taking the wheels and tyres into them, it does include them disposing of the old tyres.

I also have 5 cars and 2 bikes so this machine would do tyre changes for all of them, then there is Lionel and Chops to change treads for . .

Well, if you're doing it for pensioners, that's different.     

But for yourself, even with 2 bikes and 5 cars, you can only wear out maybe 10 tyres per year (and that would be going pretty hard).
Still, far be it from me to deny anyone else buying Big Boy's Toys.  I'm guilty enough...

I have almost talked myself out of it Biggles, but a big boys toy . . However there are many more I would prefer before this one . . A ride on mower is on the list . . Been considering that for about 3 years . .multipurpose . . Mow my lawns . . Err grass, the nature strip, the neighbours lawns and when I eventually stop riding motorbikes, I'll have fun terrorising the neighbourhood and cutting their grass at the same time . . I fear it won't be too long before this becomes a reality . .

I can’t speak for Chops but I’m not a pensioner nor will the gubermint give me a health care card.

It looks like a very good buy and most useful for changing tyres on my:
2 caravans (6 tyres)
2 cars (8 tyres)
4 motorcycles (8 tyres)
3 trailers (8 tyres)

I usually take my wheel/tyres down as well or they will come and pick them up with no extra charge if the car is off road like it is at the moment. Heather usually uses the old tyres for plants. Puts the potting mix in and tosses in a few seeds and lets nature take its course.

@ Alan . . Benefits of living in a relatively small town . . . People know each other, are friendlier and go out of their way . . Here in Canberra, they just want to screw you and make a quick buck!

Looks a good buy. Do you have a big enough compressor to run the machine?
I would want to know how much extra for the bike and mower tyre adaptors, and freight as it looks pretty heavy. Would need a balancing machine too.
But if you have the cash and space I would be buying it and changing tyres for the fun of doing it.

I'm sure the guys down at my tyre dealer use the same one on my bike wheels as they do on the cars but next time I'm down to  the shops I 'll call around and ask. It would be nice if they had the adapter to balance the bike wheels but they don't do enough road bike tyres to warrant the cost.

Adaptor for motorcycle tyres is only $125 freight free, but for most bikes . . ST1300 you don't really need it.

The unit weighs 250 kilos, so no lightweight, I am going to be in Adelaide for a week with a trailer and can pick it up while I am there, saving $300 or $400 in freight . . Guessing.

They do a deal with a proper wheel balancer and the tyre changer for around $2,150 all up plus freight.

I have a manual balancer and it works well with the motorbike tyres . . I was tempted though . .  The motorcycle adaptor for the balancer was a tad dearer at around $350 . .

I work it out by how many tyres do I change a year (two) x $35.00 per tyre (balanced) at the local dealer divided by the cost of machine and how many years it would take to pay for itself - how much it would hurt my hands to do it each time - how much a bigger compressor would cost - where to put it = NO.

Setting it up with room to work around it would take up about 4 sq metres, I guess, which implies a decent sized shed or garage.  That's without the full sized compressor.  But if it's for a servicing a decent fleet of vehicles like Lionel's, then you'd make the space.

I do mine with a pair of tire leavers and a hand bead breaker, not in love doing the front one as the bead creaps when you are getting the last one on so I usually get a had from someone to hold it while I bash away with the rubber hammer. Much cheaper than buying a machine but a bit more effort.
