VIC High Country Ride - Nov '25
« on: September 11, 2025, 01:18:12 PM »
A mate (Pete, from AusTouring, on his DR650) and I (and perhaps one or two others) are having a six day ride from Melbourne to Corryong (and back) coming up.  Let me know if you would be interested in tagging along for one or more days and overnights.

In the meantime, here's some details to whet the appetitie.
  • Wednesday 5 November:  Melbourne to King Valley Camp (overnight in a cabin) via Warburton, Matlock, Jamieson, Tolmie
  • Thursday 6 November:  King Valley Camp to Eskdale (overnight at pub) via Dandongadale, Porepunkah*, Tawonga, around the base of Mount Bogong, Mitta Mitta
  • Friday 7 & Saturday 8 November:  at Corryong (there's a V-Strom get together on that weekend).
  • Home via Benambra, Omeo, Dog's Grave, Dargo, Heyfield - details for Sunday and Monday nights to be worked out.

The routes are not set in concrete but it's fair to say that there'll be 50km to 100km of dirt and gravel each day, so an adventure, dirt or dual sport bike will be necessary.

All nights will be in a cabin (King Valley Camp), hotel (Eskdale) or motel (Corryong), so although no camping, a sleeping bag and linen will be required (King Valley Camp).

Yeah, let me know if you would be interested in tagging along for one or more days and overnights.

Except for some minor items, all packed and ready to set off Wednesday morning, weather forecasts are a mixed bag, but fingers are crossed that they are wrong.  Meeting a mate (Pete) at Toolangi, then Gordo at Thorton, first night King River Camp.

Camera battery is fully charged, stand by for some good pics.

Great roads around Corryong. I loved the ride around there which we did in February this year

I'll try and post a pic or three at the end of each day.

Yeah, great roads, when you dodge the potholes and gravel ones.  We'll be riding about 50% gravel, a different sort of great.

Tried to provide a daily progress report but found pics needs re-sizing and that was too cumbersome on the iPhone.  Home at around 1:00pm today, things much easier on the laptop, so here goes.

But before I do, I made a note from one of Langers' recent posts re. needing to remove & refit his smart phone from the handle bars to take some photos (something I'd found a nuisance previously) so I dug out an old digital camera, charged the battery, and I'm happy with the results, when I remembered to use it, as there are a few gaps.

Some of the gaps may be filled later with Pete's pics.  Pete is "Glitch" from AusTouring, I'll post a link to his ride report in AusTouring, in due course.

Wednesday 5 November

First stop, fill-up and then 200m to Beechworth Bakery at Healesville for a cappucinno and a snag roll whilst I wait for Pete.

Due to much overnight rain and some slippery gravel roads, the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry, and a more suitable route over the Black Spur was taken - although there was a little dirty detour around the base of The Cathedral, then a short wait at Thornton for Gordo.

Some back roads (hope Gordo or Pete have some pics) to the old Yea Railway Station.

And then Skyline Road, on the way to Peppin Point and Bonnie Doon for lunch (views of Lake Eildon).

It was somewhere on Skyline that we had our first mishap for the trip.  I took my eyes of the track (to look down Conundrum Track), went wide and ended up in the open, wet and very slippery spoon drain.  Didn't knock back the help of two burly assistants in getting back on track.

No photos from me, but the other guys will have some.

After Bonnie Doon, more back roads, by-passed Mansfield, up the Old Tolmie Road (Heather Ewart's Backroads' Tolmie epsiode is worth a view).  Our plan for McDonalds' Track and Christopher Road were thwarted by wet, slippery, red clay and very steep grades.  The tracks will be dry one day.

Overnight was at King River Camp (a respectable $45 per head).  Dinner was the Whitfield Hotel's $35 special, a 300g porterhouse & glass of Pizzini Pinot Noir, and although a little exxy, was damn good.

Thursday 6 November

An early night, a warm cosy cabin, but woke to around 6C and a brisk, fresh start.  Bikes packed and ready to go at 7:41am (I can be precise about the times as the CFMoto app on the iPhone records all start and end times) in time to refuel (the bikes and riders) in Whitfield.  The petrol station and café both opened at 8::00am, we were the first customers for the day at both.

With breakfast completed we're off again and Whitfield gets smaller in our rear view mirrors, this morning's route is via Gennie Annie Lane and Lake Bufalo Road to Dandongadale - about 45km of pretty good and sometimes fast gravel.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/vs9LeT9bM37wLS9f9

Then SEC Track and Goldies Spur Track, about 20km of the worst tracks I've ridden - very twisty, very steep grades, very rough, rocky, loose surface, before another 10km of good gravel, and 10km of good sealed road.

These pics are after about 30 minutes of riding.

Snow on the Mount Buller and Mount Stirling peaks.

A good section of the track.

A little further, I round a bend to see Mark, he'd stopped, side stand down, off bike, bike rolls forward off side stand, Mark looses footing and balance and takes a tumble, the result is ....

Here he is pointing to a tree stump (out of site about 10m down) where he stopped tumbling.

All is well with Mark, although an update on his sore ribs may be forthcoming.

To be continued ......

To be continued ......

Thursday 6 November - continued ....

Some repairs were required as Mark's napping DR650 was leaning on the side stand and the side stand kill switch has switching on / off randomly.

All patched, on to Porepunkah for lunch.

Over the years, country bakeries have improved, and I haven't found an exception for a long, long time, until last Thursday.  Suffice for me to say I won't be visiting the Punkah Pantry again.

After lunch we headed to Bright, Tawonga Gap and Mount Bogong.

Overlooking the Kiewa Valley and Bogong with some fluffy white stuff.

Mountain Creek Road / Eskdale Spur Track / Trappers Gap Road

The day's route was something like this.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/P8gDWCj5j2UEeW3S9

This was probably the hardest day ride I've ever done, but I was well rewarded with a series of icey cold schooners, a spicey (not the plural of spouse type) chicken parmy, the company of two gnarly accomplices and the company of Doug (a mate from Wodonga) who joined us for the night.

Pic problem, back soon to sort it out.

Friday 7 November

Complimentary continental breakfast, Pete & Gordo struggling with the coffee machine (don't recall if they got it sorted), Caterer's Blend good enough for me.  Topped-up fuel in CFMoto, squeezed about 4 litres into the fuel bladder (very slow), hit the road.

Backroad to Mitta Mitta and the Callaghens Creek Road, Yabba Road, Spring Creek Road (tackled that on the ST1300 a few years back, mostly sealed these days), Murray Valley Highway, Granya Road, and Mount Granya Road (to the summit), something like this:

Some spectacular views.

Zoomed-in on the circled bit.   The little digital has a decent zoom, aye!

Couple of young ladies had camped there in their HiAce van overnight, deck chairs around a little camp fire, a couple of wine goblets, an empty wine cask - not necessarily my choice but it would be better that many others.

On to the Wymah Ferry.  Don't pay the ferryman, 'til he gets you to the otherside - well, not even then - would have to be the most boring job.

Gooodbye VIC ....

Hello NSW

Lunch at the Walwa General Store, pretty good sandwhich prepared by a very well muscled Kiwi shearer.  I suppose shearing season is over and even shearers need an off-season job.  I'm just glad she found her second job as a sandwhich maker rather than as a bouncer at the Corryong Hotel.

Doug went one way, we went the other.  On the outskirts of Walwa there is an old church for sale.

Very tidy inside.

Just over 12,00m2 and at $260,000 there's a lot of potential for the handyman, and someone a little younger - unfortunately I'm neither.

Anyways, back on the road, more gravel and then some more good seal to Corryong via Cudgewa Bluff Road and Briggs Gap Road, and some more nice views.

Pic problem, back soon to sort it out.

Might be time to swap to another hosting site, Michael...

I've had issues with photos showing up on some of my old hosting sites for ages now and I think it may be because I've used up my allotted storage.

I swapped to this one: https://www.imghostr.net/ and so far, all seems to be good.
The only downside I've found is you cannot post PNG files...

Friday 7 November (cont.)

Had a little chat with a couple of young ladies who'd camped in the Toyota Hi-Ace overnight, a camp fire, an empty wine cask, a couple of deck chairs - there'd be worse place to get away from the crowds, but George may have been lurking somewhere.

A CFMoto

A coupla DRs

Next stop was for the Wymah Ferry, but didn't have to wait long as is was on our side and then it was goodbye VIC.

And then, hello NSW.

Don't pay the ferryman until he gets you to the other side, and then you don't pay him anyway, it's a free service.

He would to have the second most boring job, after the security guys who stands "guard" at the Centre Link office.
