Guys, I was looking on www.dealextreme.com for something else and came across what could easily be a cheaper alternative to the Drift helmet cam...and it even LOOKS the same.

http://www.dealextreme.com/p/waterproof-5mp-cmos-digital-video-camera-w-mini-usb-sd-hdmi-slot-1-5-lcd-32gb-71830?item=3

The good thing is that this is only $156 with free shipping from HK.

Worth a looksee

Cheers

That does look a lot like the Drift, although there is no remote control.  Nice that it seems to come with 2 batteries.

I noticed on the pic of its box, that it said patent...

Dont think it could mean they applied for the patent, as its an obvious clone of the Drift HD (minus the remote)

I can vouch for it Streak - Terry has the remote setup for easy on/off use, and it takes photos on the fly or vids and stores pics - it's a wee ripper!

Haven't seen the playback quality yet - but I believe it is quite acceptable. Also - make sure it has around a 170* view angle for the best on board motion footage.

This would be my choice if/when I were in the market for a cam.

Cheers, Diesel
I have the "Stealth HD" version and use it for work related purposes and a similar mount for fun use.  The remote is excellent and VERY handy.  You can also buy a small 4AA cell battery pack that provides USB power to the camera if you want to have it mounted on the helmet for extended periods.  Good for about 10hrs also.

Being only a rider that has stuff that works I would buy another "Drift" for sure if something happened to the one I have ???
I know the experts say this and the others say that, but?????? I'm so glad I know nothing and can be just happy with stuff that does the job

Been reviewing the latest cameras and have come across the Polaroid XS100 http://polaroidaction.com/xs100.html . Doesn't appear to be an Australian retailer as yet.
Some reviews put it near the gopro at half the price. Would be happy to buy a gopro but the helmet turbulence is an issue with such a boxy camera.

I hope you don't intend to put that on your helmet...

We had a look at the Hamper King website today to see what they have available for delivery before Christmas 2014.

Heather spotted this which she ordered for about $3.50 a week https://www.hamperking.com.au/hampers/electronics/digital-video-camera/hd-sports-camera/25/1

Also this Go Pro for $600 (bit rich for us) https://www.hamperking.com.au/hampers/electronics/digital-video-camera/gopro-hd-hero-action-camera/25/1

I bought a Swann Freestyle for the missus off ebay for $149. The specs are as good as the GoPro2 that I have and it comes with a remote control and a heap of mounts as well as that it has a removable battery so a charged spare can be carried, it has a removeable 1.5inch screen that allows you to review video from the camera as well as having a mini HDMI port so video can be viewed directly on a TV.
I haven't had much of a chance to play with it yet but it seems pretty good.

Oops, was actually $175 but still cheap compared to other brands.

They are down to $150 now. How do you find it? Is the resolution and sound good on a tv or monitor? How long is battery life and can you plug in to 12v on bike? How long does 32GB micro SD give you?
Cheers in advance.

OK so I purchased a Polaroid XS100 http://polaroidaction.com/xs100.html in April 2013 for $200 to my door from Amazon.
Since then they released an upgrade with a Bluetooth connection to you phone for about $40 extra.
This camera is basically a generic camera made in China and badged for a number of retailers eg Ion, Polaroid and Action, possibly the innards of the Contour+ as well.

Pros
Cheap - especially when compared to the GoPro
Compact  - especially when compared to most others
Excellent Video, close to, if not as good as the base GoPro
Slimline - idea for helmet mounting - no drag
Record time - approx 3 1/2 when new
Probably just me but Colour as well - White
Waterproof to 3 meters - Tested and it is - takes excellent underwater videos
No extra housing required
Heaps of mounts for any application

Cons
Charge and use - no charging whilst recording (I know most cameras are like that)
No ability to turn sound off
Camera creates a standard 1080 file and a 460 file at the same time (for posting on YouTube) I my opinion this is a complete waste of time and disk space
Battery is not replaceable (Biggest Con)

Would I buy one again - NO
Why - well the battery has had it and the camera doesn't do what I want it to do and how I want it to do it.
You can see the remainder of this thread in the following Post

Cheers,
A.
