Sydney Blood Bikes are coming soon...

If you have never heard of this service, the U.K. Have numerous none profit making groups who volunteer transporting vital bloods, blood cells, organs and platelets around their specific areas to and from hospital that would otherwise use expensive couriers and taxis during out of hours times to sustain their existing requirements some at a cost of $600,000 a year.

It's in the early stages if development at the moment and there are licences, legal issues, police liaison, hospital and medical service providers to speak to in order to get this service started.

Riders in the U.K. Either use their own bikes, many of which are obviously ST's other are purchased through funding from sponsorship and charitable donations and are stored centrally.  Deliveries are usually out of hours and include evenings and weekend and many of their bikes are liveried and fitted with emergency equipment (this may not be feasible in NSW).

If any members out there are Sydney based (at the moment) or have an specialised knowledge or simply would like to get involved that we could be of assistance could drop me a line.

Website needs to be done, marketing, fund raising, assistance with insurers etc, etc.

Further information on the UK service can be found at www.bloodbikes.org.uk this site has links to difference groups providing the service throughout the UK.

As I say it's early days at the moment but with a lot of work and commitment I'm hoping this will get off the ground in 2013.

Look forward to hearing from you all......

Nat

This sounds like an excellent idea, and one well worth supporting, especially when it comes to Brisbane and SEQ.  :thumbs :thumbsup

As a blood donor and keen rider, I'm definitely in for volunteering for a worthy cause like this.  I hope the legal BS can be overcome in Australia and every capital city gets on board.  I presume in Oz it would be under the auspices of the Red Cross since they run the Blood Bank (at least in Queensland they do).

Rather than needing donations, I reckon a lot of us would be happy to pay for any mods to the bike (e.g. stickers).  I do notice the Freewheelers in the UK tend to use STs and FJRs.

For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Hi Natman,

How is the "Bloodbike" idea going???  Sent you a PM when you posted the idea.  I'm happy to help where I can.  Might have to buy the red 1100 on Ebay in Victoria for the "blood bike".

Cheers
