2005 ST1300 best fuel consumption
« on: February 26, 2013, 02:27:43 PM »
 :13Candy

Hello folks,

I took my 2005 ST 1300 for a run down to Bungendore and the st got the best fuel consumption to date ... 72.5 ks per litre!!

My best previous was 60.7

Bungendore is a small village between Braidwood and Canberra.

It was  24 degrees, 100% cloud cover, dry road, no wind, humidity around 70%

And I was doing 103 kph at the time (going down hill with the clutch in) - no one behind or in front so it was safe to do so.

Enjoy!  Idid

Hi Steve and welcome to the forum.   Those figures are remarkable, and give a full tank range of 2,100km, so I suspet an error in your calculations.  If you are correct, then I am very disaapointed with my 20 kilometers per litre.

There must be a hell of a lot of hills between Braidwood and Canberra...all going DOWN,  for the ST to get to roughly 3.3 times the usual consumption figures, Sorry Steve, but I still suspect an error somewhere in there.  :think1

It looks like an instantaneous reading after 15 seconds of high speed downhill with the clutch in and engine idling.   ie "Cheat Mode"    Wot thuh.
Still, it's an impressively large number to see on the readout.

A truly great result - very satisfying what with fuel prices as they are!   :hatwave   Now, tell us what the fuel consumption was on the return journey... >:()

There are a couple of hills there you could go down and get those figures,  in fact with the engine off. Just a matter of how far you want to push the ST...

Just make sure you're in 5th gear if you pop the clutch at 110 kph idling.  And the road is dry.  Rolling straight.    :o

When planning a trip, use the lowest (worst) figure to guestimate your fuel requirements. IE

a trip of 2000Ks @ 17 Ks/l = 118 litres. cost= 118 @ $2.50/L (real bad case) approx $300.00. Better consumption = beer money at destination.. :grin :grin

When I have my rig hitched up, the ST usually gets around 16ks per litre.

With head on winds 14ks

If it is hilly (with steep ones like the run from Bathurst to Mudgee) it will run down to 8ks per litre

So guy's how far have you gone on a tank full. I mean to a standstill of one full tank...

I'll open with 535km and still only put 23.7 ltrs back in to the top.  22.5 km/l

Best Ive had was 59.5mpg (21km/l) on trip from Gloucester to Stanthorpe....two up !

I think I was pretty much doing the speed limit however I was pulled over just south of the Qld border and presented with a speeding ticket by the NSW Constabulary

Incidentally I got 553 km out of that tank...it took 26.4 litres ( :p) when I filled up at Stanthorpe ! I remember being a little nervous about that tank.

559km to a standstill and rolled round the bend out of the fast lane. Interestingly the litre meter was claiming I had 3.5ltrs left.
4.7ltrs out of the tin and a fill up 5km later took 24.130ltr.
This was mixed speeds including nights at 100km or less, open day running at up to $120 for miles on end and some fun twisty stuff. Lets say an even mix.
Im happy with those figures.

But

Im going to set sail at 100km/h constant and see what we get..just for the fun

Interesting that your "run to dry" took virtually 29 litres to fill.
My last effort in the same category did the same thing.  I put in one litre, rode 1 km to the Servo and it took 27.9 litres.
The reason I comment is that my previous couple of experiences tended to indicate that there was one litre unusable in the tank.
The classic one I had in Rockhampton was when it quit right at the bowser (after riding for 70 kays with the light flashing) yet only took 26.3 litres.
Makes you wonder about the accuracy of the pumps more than our bikes.  They could easily get away with inaccurate pumps because no one else measures their fuel to the degree of accuracy as we do.

Fair point Biggles.

I usually shake crap out of my TDM and might get another 10 or 12 km's before its totally beyond hope. ST isn't at all happy to get a good shake at any speed so I felt at the time I was probably not going to get everything out of the tank but once the figures came up I thought Hmmm maybe that's all the bike could pick up .

Plenty of times I see the money side of a pump start counting well before fuel starts to run  IN THE PUMP not just the hose. I've questioned that at the suspect servo and got a blank look.
I have a mate in weights and measures and they get hundreds of complaints along those lines.
Seems calibration and the flow activated trigger position makes all the difference.

All sounds like something to look forward too ,my GPZ900r only travels about 12.5km to the litre, the Varadero about 14.5.so 20km/litre sounds great.
No longer dreaming. Past bikes,XR80 1979,DT175 1980,XT250 G 1980(X2), XT 250T, GPZ900r (x2), H100, TT350, TTR250.  current bikes Honda Varadero 1999, GPZ 900r 1986, XT 250T 1987, and newest and best , 2006 ST1300.

I've averaged 20.6 over the past 24,000kls. Almost all riding is done on country roads with only an occasional trip to town.  :grin

Winston 66,
I don't know about you blokes but I reckon that I can beat any of your previous records in my old trusty IVECO  Diesel 49/12 Daily Van.
I recently had a return trip from Northampton to Exmouth approx 1800 Klms.
And by dead reckoning my total usage of diesel was only about four liters.
The secret of course was not t o use the recommended fuel and pay lots of tax to the GOVT.
But instead the run the old beast on used vegetable oil from the local hamburger joint.
The total cost for the return trip was only about $6.00 or $7.00
Cheers .
