Cunningham HWY Closed by Boulder - pic
« on: December 03, 2013, 05:18:18 PM »
The Cunningham Highway near Gap Creek Bridge will remain closed in both directions for an indefinite period.

A large boulder has fallen to the road, blocking both lanes.

Major delays are expected. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes or delay their travel until tomorrow.

Cheers, Diesel

Good to see the safety barriers/fence worked a treat.

I suspect no one imagined needing to stop that mother!

Would have been a pain in the derriere for anyone arriving at the scene.  The alternative routes are quite a ways from there.

A pity as I did not mind that road.

It would be fixed by now.  There's a continual stream of semis using it between Brisbane and the Newell.

Update on that:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-12-04/removing-giant-boulder-on-cunningham-highway-to-take-days/5133954

300 tonne rock landed on the road and blocked it.  Apparently there is another 800 tonne just hanging onto the hillside that has to be removed as well.

Work projected to continue until Friday, but I'm not sure I'd hold my breath - once the rock is removed they have to assess and repair the road underneath it.
