The ST1100 is new for me. I purchased her in Nov 2013 from a guy who really looked after it. He said he changed the oil every 6 months or 5 or 6 thousand kms whichever came first.
I do know that at 50,000 approximately he changed the clutch plates and the timing belt because he always had the clutch drag a bit so he wanted to fix that and did the timing belt while he was in there. Lucky for me I wont be doing that anytime soon.
I decide to run PM lubricants PM412 a 15W-40 and changed to a K&N oil filter at the same time. I based this on the great read on the subject of oil here on this site.
www.ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=934.0I will be honest this was the best read on oils I have ever done and Rocketeer made a lot of sense. I liked the openness and honesty and good plain common sense.
I was glad I did the change quickly as what came out was a good deal dirtier than I expected. Dropped in the PM412 and the red showed up nice in the oil level window. Going to keep a close eye on this. First impressions, ... Love it. I don't think its imagination but I think the gear box is less chunky and she runs just nice. I also dropped it in my BA Falcon and I swear it runs quieter in the engine bay now. The BA has 184,000 kms on her now, but I really like this oil so far.
The other little bit of greasing was after reading on STOC forums about the gear shifter linkage and the side stand getting a bit dry. So I thought I would investigate them both now that 60,000 have come and gone.
Glad I did. I found that both the shifter linkage and the side stands were up for a new bit of lube. No apparent damage anywhere but definitely very much on the dry side. So now I am very comfortable that they are good to go.
