Trailer plans
« on: February 10, 2012, 07:23:31 PM »
 :rd13   :hatwave
  Hi everybody,
Have been sitting at home in this latest heat wave 43 deg c. plus for the last week or so and the heat and boredoom has gone to my head.
I seem to have developed a yen to build a trailer to put behind the ST. and then set off on some sort of extended tour. Possibly even a circumnavagation,
However as I have no knowledge of any of the probable pit falls in such a building project and the legal requirements in design etc.  I would hope that I could gleen some points of reference, from some one who has already gone down this path.
Being so isolated over here it is difficult if not impossible to get any reliable information re Motorcycle trailers.
The local vehicle inspectors do not have a clue as to what is required for licencing purposes.
Unfortunatley I do Not have the readys to just go out and select and then purchase a unit from the manufacturers in the eastern states. I do not think that there are any  here in W.A.
But I would enjoy the exercise of constructing my own unit anyway.
I hope that there is someone out there that can send a few ideas my way.
  Cheers to you all,

Winston,

I have started to build my own trailer, thread here
http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=258.0
somewhere on the transport dept website www.transport.wa.gov.au/ are the aust standards for trailers in general.

I havent completed my trailer, or the plans as yet so cant help with drawings/plans.

I got basic sizes from looking at this bandicoot trailer here http://www.bandicoots.com.au/Motorcycletrailers/REGULARCOOT/Dimensionsandspecs.aspx

and then started drawing cutting and welding (and setting fire to the grass)

Hmmmm he says, not being able to hit a nail in a piece of wood I brought a second hand bike trailer. Now it cost me all up after a bit of wiring $1200. It is a Klassic Trailer. Now me thinks if you can build one cheaper most excellent, but for me it was the way to go. Now seeing as the West is a long way away,  what about doing a computer search like Ebay and such, find a trailer and then use picking it up as an excuse to do some kays :thumbsup
All you need for this one is a Tarp:  http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Trailer-Perfect-small-cars-Motorbike-Trailer-/120857139221?pt=AU_Trailers&hash=item1c23a59815
This one has a roof:   http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/motorcycle-trailer-trex-/330682529116?pt=AU_Trailers&hash=item4cfe36f55c
Then theirs the Dreamers: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Trailer-tow-behind-Motorbike-/140691647063?pt=AU_Trailers&hash=item20c1e02a57
And heres some Plans:   http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-MOTORCYCLE-TRAILER-PLANS-Honda-Gold-Wing-Harley-Plans-/200677489540?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2eb94f7b84
Seen a few of those built but they still cost easily $800.00 or so and thats without the tow bar on the Bike

HI,

Just as a matter of interest, this one is available from Perth. It's a basic trailer

http://www.tourlitetrailers.com.au/Trailers/BikeTrailers/tabid/111/CategoryID/4/List/0/Level/1/ProductID/13/Default.aspx?SortField=UnitCost%2cProductName

and they do have a camper trailer as well

http://tourlitetrailers.com.au/Trailers/MotorcycleCamperTrailer/tabid/122/CategoryID/5/List/0/Level/1/productid/16/Default.aspx?SortField=UnitCost%2cProductName+DESC

There are also used trailers to consider as well.

Having decided that you wish to either buy or build a trailer you need to get a towbar to suit your bike.

I got mine from Classic Trailers  http://www.classicind.com.au/

A year ago we bought our second trailer for $1000, it's twenty years old and well looked after. All I've done to it is upgraded the lights to LED.

A bit like me in a way. The effort and thinking required is a good way to exercise the brain and the arms. Wrestling a kicking grinder takes some doing) and then there is the other exercise, when you set fire to the lawn and have to run for the hose.

Well everyone,   :rd13   :hatwave
I am stoked. I never immagined that I would get such a helpfull ,or interested , or quick response.
As yet I have not followed up on any of the links, but will do so this evening once the beer tasting session is ended.
I do appreciate the inputs from all of you.
I realise that there are many different aspects to consider as to weather to buy or construct.
I think that one of the major benefits in a purpose built unit is the incorporation of any specially designed custom features.
That said I realise that "one mans meat is anothers poision" , and that any specific design criteria will not suit everyone and not be suitable for every job that might be asked of it.
That being said , if you were in my position, would anyone care to suggest what features you might consider to incorporate in a basic design which is intended primarily for touring and camping out.
I will be awaiting any comments with interest.
  Cheers to you all.

 Hi Brock,   :rd13 :hatwave

I can only say that you have got it right 100% .
And I can testify that you are not the only persion to set fire to the lawn with an angle grinder.
Please do not ask me how I know,

Cheers.

Mine will have a box at the back, 800x800x400 high. A tapered box at the front for battery , tools etc. maybe a rack at the front for an esky of some sort. the boxes will have lidded tops, and the big box will have a roof rack of some sort.. have a look at the link for bandicoot trailers for the sort of thing I am making.

You will need lots of 25mm square section 2mm wall, 25x50mm (3mm wall), a length of 50 square, and lots of aly sheet. Also need lots of mig wire, aly and steel, and argon gas.  you also need lots of grinding cutting discs, a drop saw is good too.

Oh, wheels axle and stuff.

Well guys the one I intend to build  will be some what different than what  you are talking about.

To start with it will be electric over hydraulic brake system ( needed as it will be 1600 x 2.4 min size/
constructed out of alum/Styrofoam/paper/plastic & pvc  with just the min basics in steel for chassis and independent suspension.....

All is in planning and DWG stages at the moment as details are still being work on.
Idea is  a pop top with no canvas at all, plus extras.  :think1 :think1 :-((( only when all is complete.. :beer will more details be forthcoming.... why ::) it could be a total screw up yetti but I doubt it
