SA IBA SS1600k Ride - September 24th 2016
« on: September 21, 2015, 12:32:36 PM »
I'm proposing an IBA ride opportunity, principally for SA, Vic or other OzSTOC members, to participate in an IBA ss1600k ride in September 2016.  This is aimed at those who are keen to "have a go" or to get further involved in Long Distance Riding and want to make an attempt  within a supportive and encouraging environment.    I seek expressions of interest from five or seven other participants (for a total of eight riders) who would ride in pairs to encourage each other along the way.

It is not planned to be a formal OzSTOC Group IBA Ride as was the Coffs Harbour ride in October 2014, and each participant would need to submit all of their own paperwork to IBA for certification and pay their own fees.  I will arrange to have someone present at the start and finish location (same location) to sign all of the Start and Finish witness documents, as participants cannot be witnesses for each other.   Start time would be 0200hrs and estimated finish time would be between 2000hrs to around 2230hrs depending upon how your ride progresses.

IBA Rides and Rules can be found at this link.....
http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/getdocument.cfm?DocID=30

I would encourage anyone contemplating an IBA ride to read their “Archive of Wisdom”, which can be found here, and I suggest that you go to the link at the bottom of the page and read the “Printer Firendly” version.
http://www.ironbutt.com/tech/aow.cfm

The route that I had in mind can be seen here.....
https://goo.gl/maps/vohbG

If this idea fails to gain legs, I'm happy to defer or cancel it.

Goodonya for proposing this and coming up with a plan.  I think you'll find enough starters willing to ride to Adelaide to join in.  There would be a few Victorians who felt northern NSW was too far last time who would consider SA more feasible.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Great idea.

I'm in, but if your numbers get too big, I'll withdraw.

Thanks Abe.   It would be great to have a couple of experienced LDRs join in, to encourage and support.   :thumb

I would like to take part in this ride.  :runyay
If the numbers are too many I will get the start witness to sign my start form and then wait a respectable time to get a start docket.
Elliston and Cowell are likely to be the only choke points in terms of available bowsers. If numbers are likely to be a problem I would top up in Streaky Bay and Whyalla. Though I would still get a shop receipt/ATM receipt in Elliston and Cowell for the documentation.

Thanks Lionel.   I've had a look at those two servos and rang them to get their opening hours, and I picked those spots as they break the trip into 200 -250km steps if people are struggling with the "sit" distance.

I can't confirm this one and it all depends on the timing of my WA trip since I can't do it in March has hoped. I was looking at leaving home on maybe the border ride weekend at the latest which would get me back home mid August.

And a bit more fatigue management.

Keep hydrated, no coffee/caffeine as the deficit is a killer. Keep the nutrition up with muesli bars.

Read the IBA fatigue management FAQ.

The attached image is a Spreadsheet showing some distances and times for the ride, which may help any who are new to LD riding.   Distances between breaks are quite conservative, and experienced riders may choose to ride to a different plan.

I've done Cowell to Elliston by car and Cowell to Lock on the ST with this section having a few bends. https://goo.gl/maps/FD4wnnhZyxT2 With my daughter in Whyalla I usually go there on my way to/from the west and I need to choose between Iron Knob or going via Cowell so when heading west I go via Cowell and when heading back East I go via Iron Knob.
