I've traveled PDR in a 4WD. On advice from locals, I left 4WD engaged from Lakeland to Weipa and return. Turns out it was good advice as it gave steering control on the loose, ball like, bauxite gravel.
The road was badly corrugated and the traveling at 20 to 30 km/h was shaking the vehicle too much. 50 to 60 was a bit better, but 80 to 100 was smoothest. This is however, very tiring as you have to be very much on the lookout for dips in the roadway and potholes full of bulldust.
The other vehicle traveling with me (Toyota Hiace trayback ute) managed to shake its mudguard off. A little later it hit a big bump in the Centre of the road hidden by the cloud of dust from a roadtrain heading north, launch all 4 Wheels into the air, land on all 4 Wheels biunce and then spit the chained down spare out of the tray, onto the road and into the bush. We recovered that & wired the mudguard back on.
Enough reminiscing, UHT.
