Saw Doctor today, referred to hospital tomorrow morning for more xrays,
and will soon have a date for a top Ortho Surgeon in Geelong Hospital.

Am walking again without too much discomfort.
Doctor said I should hold off getting my knee replaced and see if I can manage, unless the pain is too great.
Eventually it will have to be done, but he said that to delay surgery as long as possible is the best course of action

Would be interesting to know his reasoning.  People I know who've had it say it hurts something terrible for a while, but restores their mobility completely.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Will you still get any financial assistance to cover out of pocket expenses should you hold off?

You will want to get something in writing from his insurance company to ensure if you get this done at a later date that ANY out of pocket expenses are covered by them.

The reason they like to delay is the 'donk' - artificial joint has a limited life approx 10 to 15 years and where it has to be replaced.

They don't like to do more than one.

I don't even have the name or rego of the driver, or even the make of the vehicle, until I hear back from TAC.

Still having difficulty and pain moving around, but much better mobility than a week ago.
Spoke to the guy who is holding my bike, but assessors have not even looked at it yet, seems they are 'on holidays'?
Was told that the guy who I impacted is the local 'DH' of the town of Birchip, and he intends to claim damages from me. ???
HE is the one who caused the accident??

That's not good.  I hit a kangaroo in Bundey SA the year before last and the bike shop also told me they had issues with the assessors (which I took with a grain of salt).  The demise of said bike shop last year is how I stumbled across this forum and enable me to attend a few RTE's including Balranald.  I hope you recover soon and get all that mess sorted out as well.

Latest update.

Had a mild stroke 3 weeks ago from a blood clot caused by the accident. I lost motor control of my right arm. Doc gave me a one-off dose of Ratsak (Warfarin) to dissolve the clot, and I now have 95% use of my right arm, altho' I still sometimes slop my coffee  :grin
Am improving daily, can now use keyboard with both hands again.

Was as funny as hell the first couple of days with the floppy arm. I wasn't game to attempt to light a ciggy, as I was unsure if I would set fire to my ear, my armpit, or my elbow!  Stabbed myself in the face with a spoon at mealtimes a couple of times as well  :crackup

Contacted RACV in Birchip today regarding recovery of my bike, and will travel there on Friday 23rd in three weeks time to trailer it home.
Then comes assessment of repairs.  Replacement plastics will arrive tonight, many thanks to AJ1300 for supply at a very reasonable price.

May take a few months to afford the cost of as-yet unknown repairs.

Life is good.  :thumb

Shyte Kev, you are in the wars.  Good luck with the recoveries.

Some of my thoughts:

  *  One arm didn't slow you down on the keyboard.

  *  Two hands on the keyboard.  Hopefully the jokes will improve.

  *  No smoking?  Every cloud has a silver lining.

  *  Afford the cost of the repairs?  Whiskey Tango Foxtrot???  Isn't the other at fault party bearing the cost of full restorations and repair?

  *  Life is good.  Sure is!

Do you need a hand getting the bike from Birchip?  I might be able to help ..... might, 'specially if you have access to a trailer.

All good Michael, regarding picking up the bike. Have a trailer with a winch and 3 mates coming for the trip. Thanks for the offer.

The at fault driver has no funds, waste of time trying to get anything from him as he was also uninsured.

If you're insured then they'll fix the bike (unless it's a write off) for you and chase up the other party for the cash

Neither of us were insured. I let mine lapse so that I had the funds to attend the RTE that weekend, with intention of re-insuring the following weekend when I received my next pension payment. My insurance expired 3 days before the accident.
Just bad timing.
