St1300 headlight globes
« on: October 16, 2017, 08:40:01 PM »
Hiya all,
So i went to my local honda dealer cause I've blown a headlight globe but i couldn't get one in fact the guy had no bloody idea what he was doing so i left with a wtf was that moment.... so anyway i need to get a new globe so where's the best place in newcastle?
Can you get a globe up grade? I find the 45 45 globe pretty good but thought why not get a one a little bit brighter.
Cheers in advance Dean

With a bit of tinkering, you can get an H3 globe to fit. Unfortunately our bikes use an odd spec globe that is difficult to find.

More info shortly.

Would you go a bigger wattage globe or keep the same?

Here is a previous thread on 1300 globes.

I went through a couple of stages and the Narva plus 100 H4 globes, with the bottom two tabs bent back, or cut off worked well. More light and clearer vision.

http://www.narva.com.au/products/browse/performance-globes

I finished up going to LEDs in the end, and was super impressed.  They've improved, pardon the pun, out of sight in the last 2 years.

Strange the Dealer didn't know

Part number is this 34901-MS2-672 but I wouldn't pay $40 for Honda's 45/45W globe

Same price for the 1100 globe 34901-MN5-003 - wonder what the difference is (apart from supplier)?

The UK spec bike takes a standard 55/60W H4 globe and the only difference is the tab positions for the globes.

I have these Philips LEDs installed as well and can only agree with Gadget. I previously had the LED globes raved on about over at ST-Owners. I came to the conclusion that they were garbage.

On the other hand, these Philips LEDs really are excellent. I am happy to do a light shootout. They can be had at PowerBulbs for a very good price.

Just changed from osram silverstar2 to Philips ecolife... 4x the life, and I can't tell the diff (had one in each reflector, and light output & color looked identical).  Can't bear the price of good led bulbs though (cheap led's don't tend to have proper low beam cutoff so produce a lot of glare.

The Osram Night breakers are fairly good as well and a lot more light down the road towards the limit of the high beam.

After some trial and error, these are the LED globes that I have settled on.   They have a good high and low beam, with a highly effective  low beam “cut-off”, and the beam patterns are quite flat.   These were recommended to me by Shiney

That's excellent, Pete.  It's from Alibaba in China.  With the US$4 new member coupon, it's two top LEDs for US$21 including free postage.   I don't know how the Chinese do it, but ya gotta love it! :thumbs

I followed Shiney/Draco's lead as well and fitted a pair of these.  Haven't done any night riding with them but I'm told they're easy to spot in the mirrors during the day.

I've done a fair bit of night riding with these and they compliment my flood style spotties very well, significantly increasing the penetration down the road.   ll get some photos up showing the beam patterns.

Just a question re the LED lights with the large heat sinks at the power end of the globe.
I'm guessing this presents some challenges for installation as there isn't an abundance of space down there to play around with. Second question being that with everything in place I would guess that there is a fair amount of heat build up on the inside of the headlight assembly. Better to have the cooling inside or outside the assembly - or no noticeable difference?

cheers

That interests me too, since the considerable heat certainly has to be dissipated somewhere.  As you say, it used to be at the rear of the unit from a relatively large block of metal.

LEDs run considerably cooler than halogens.

My house LEDs (equivalent to 100 W) are cool enough to touch immediately after they are turned off. They're very warm, but not hot.

To put this in perspective, the standard incandescent globes would also be pumping out a lot of heat into the headlight housing.

To put some numbers around it!. According to wikipedia typical incandesant bulb puts our about 16 lumens/watt at around 5% efficiency whereas the LED bulb referred to above states it puts out 2000 lumens with 20 watts, ie 100 lumens/watt and should be around 80% efficient.
In terms of heat produced, the 55w incandesant bulb will emit around 52 watts of heat whereas the LED bulb should emit around 4 watts of heat.
