Hi guys / gals. My names Dave from Gold Coast , have recently seen the light and purchased a 04 st1300. Am enjoying it immensely and look forward to catching up with some fellow enthusiasts in the near future. Great site , so much knowledge out there. My past bikes have been a very mixed bunch. Most recent was BMW r1100s which threw a gearbox input shaft at 30,000 ks and emptied my bank account. I still have a few others atm mostly classics. Suzuki sp370. Kawasaki two strokes ect. Have ordered a laminar lip for the original screen and a airhawk seat pad , what are your thoughts? Also experiencing the heat issue "phew" have removed the inner cowling and considering buying baker built air deflectors but seem expensive for two bits of Perspex would love to hear if they work first. Fitting a sheepskin seat cover will go a long way to resolving the heat issue, as it seals the gap between the tank and the rider's seat.

Welcome to the fray. As Pete says, the sheepie seals the gap in front of the seat. I too have the front inners removed. The only time my legs are too hot is when the ambient is around 40 degrees or when sitting at the traffic lights in 35 degrees. Just don't wear shorts, as I see some champions (mostly on sports bikes) do. I'm in Brisbane and ride every day I can and am on my third ST1300, so there's a vote of confidence. And if I break or wear out this one, I'll be looking for another one.

Hi Dave. Welcome on in. I use the Airhawk for when I am going to be on the bike for more than an hour. It definitely helps but you need to play with the pressure to get it to suit your needs. The lower the pressure the better, as long as you have a a bit of air between your butt and the seat.
Just check if the lugs under the riders seat are bent forward a bit to allow the rear of the seat to drop a step lower than it normally would. This helps level the seat. Downside is that it only gives you 2 height adjustments. A trick worth trying before you mess with the seat too much.

I haven't met anyone that experienced success with the air hawk on the oem seat. By the look of the photos your seat is in the standard setting. If you drop the rear of the seat down to the lower setting, and the front of the seat to the middle setting, you will find the ride a lot more comfortable, and it removes the feeling of your nuts sliding into the tank if you have to pull up quick

It helps improve the leg circulation a bit as well

I recommend a Sargent seat as an after market replacement - I went from doing 3-400kms per day to over 700 with a seat change, and a set of highway pegs allowing for better leg circulation

My 2 bob's worth ref Airhawks. I love mine- I have it under the sheepskin where it doesn't slide around, doesn't spoil the looks and doesn't get pinched.

Hey. Yep 1964 mk1 Morris 1100. Not many left anymore. Mines a daily driver. Just love it

The last problem I had short story, up behind the right hand headlight is a connector that holds about 15 or so earth wires, one had slightly burnt out, made the bike act like it was possessed lights blinking on and off headlights would not go off. When riding if you turned the handle bars to left the bike would stall. Just crazy really lol. I was able to fix it myself. Thanks to ozstoc.

Anyway what worked for me on my old ST was a Bagster tank cover
This blocked all the heat that was coming off the tank from getting to my legs

(They come in a wide range of colours and you can also attach some awesome tank bags to them)

You'll find a lot of guys use these, although they aren't cheap (brand new) I consider it to be a worthy investment

Hear are some pictures of the Bagster Tank cover on my old 2014 ST1300 (Not the best pictures but you can get the idea)

As for the modification to the seat the guys are talking about... there is a guide on the forum located here
