total shut-down
« on: June 17, 2018, 07:21:08 AM »
Interesting problem occurred to me yesterday. When I arrived at the ground to play soccer, I pulled into the parking bay to park the bike when all power cut out on the bike, then came back on again and I restarted the bike to continue parking. This happened three times before I got the bike into the parking spot. I was running late to play, so didn't investigate anything on causes. After the game I went to start the bike, nothing, no lights, dash or headlights. Got a little concerned as daylight was fading, all the team-mates had gone, was worried I would have to leave the bike in an isolated park, alone and homeless.

On further investigation, this is what I found. When I sat astride the bike and turned the handlebars straight, all the dash and headlights came on. when I turned the handlebars to the left, all the lights went off. To my relief, I could at least get the bike home. Just had to take care doing left turns. Got home ok with the bike, fully dark by then, very pleased to have it at home.

My theory is a loose connection or worn insulation on a wire causing the electrics to short out. Wont be investigating until later in the week, but advice from you guys would give me a starting point on the investigation.

This is the first 'glitch' since rebuilding my bike 7yrs ago and 50,000klms.

Cheers, Hobs

:popcorn  :popcorn. You will have to let us know what the fault is once it is located.  At least you could get it home.    Raises an interesting problem on how to get home by only turning right  :think1

You've found the fault yourself.  Lift the tank and look at what wires are stretched by the left turn.  You'll find a connection is being pulled apart, most likely, rather than a short which would normally blow a fuse.
Odd that it should just occur like that.  What else did you do to the bike in the last few days?.  If not you, has a rat/ bat/ snake moved into a cavity in the bike?
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Check that the handle bar wiring is correctly seated in the sockets (under the shelter at the front), also check the looming ahsnt been secured with too little slack.

Nothing new or different done to the bike lately. did complete a 70klm round trip to get to the game and no issues until I did a full left turn on the handlebars to park.

Just leaned the bike a little more on left hand turns and all ok.

Yes we won the soccer match 3-0, and I saved two penalty shots. Not bad for a 66yr old.

No.  I gave it away in 2010 after a reoccurring shoulder injury.  I dislocated it and since then it has been easy to pop put... about two dozen times between then and 2012.  Not much since then but football has taken a back step since I've got into riding.

Well, tried today to remove the ignition switch assembly, but to no success. Removed a reasonable amount of plastic to be able to get access to the two SH screws that hold the switch in place. Seems like the screws are seized into the aluminium frame of the headstock. Tried various methods, brut force, tapping with a punch, ample spray of WD40, but to no avail. Will have to pull the steering headstock off to be able to get a better access to the screws. Why does the simple fixes always end up the major dramas. the problem is the wiring going to the ignition switch is either lose or broken causing the power cut-out issue.

Why didn't the designers of the bike mount the ignition switch on the top of the headstock, where at least you could get at the screws holding it on, or at least lubricate the threads to stop the seizing effect. Very frustrating design. Anybody else had this frustrating problem? The screws will have plenty of thread lubricant when I have completed this little frustrating task.

.... Tried various methods, brut force, tapping with a punch, ample spray of WD40, but to no avail.....

Had similar trouble recently trying to loosen an axle nut on the RAV4.  A different scale, different materials, same problem though.

Talked to mechanics at auto repair workshop next to the office.  Their opinion of WD40 for difficult jobs was not complimentary, use an ATF diluted with acetone they said.   Googled that when I got home, amongst the search finds, I come across this: https://youtu.be/2WuVBFTzoKc

Makes some sense to me.  ATF was on my workshop shelf, oil dispenser and acetone was in the shelf at Bunnings.  The mixture made up, applied liberally over a few days.

Didn't make any difference though, even after plenty of brute force, so much so that I bent a Sidchrome socket drive extension with a bit of water pipe to add some leverage.

Took RAV to the workshop, guys removed the nut with a pneumatic rattle gun, they were happy that I had applied the mixture though, said it made the job easier.

Found the problem, the wiring harness assy. at the bottom of the switch unit, see attached photo. Had no luck repairing the switch as due to age and wear, the mechanism was ready to fail completely, was lucky to have been able to get home when it did fail. Decided to order a new switch assy. Couldn't trust the old switch mechanism of failing again somewhere isolated and alone.

cheers, Hobs

It's very good that you've found the problem, and a solution is at hand.   Intermittent electrical problems can be such a PIA.
