2018-08-04 Ride On Sealant Install.
« on: August 04, 2018, 03:45:00 PM »
After getting back from this ride http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=12898.msg1241473#msg1241473 from WA the rear tyre developed a slight leak and would go flat within two days.

A few days ago I ordered so Ride On Sealant to see how this stuff would go as the tyre still has about half it's life left and it arrived yesterday.

http://gonetouring.com.au/Accessories/tabid/91/Accessory/385/Ride-On-Tyre-Protection-Sealant-and-Balancer.aspx

I had checked the tyre a few times and still couldn't see or hear any air escaping and before attempting to put the sealant in got some soapy water checked the tyre out again. I doubted that the shorter valve would have been an issue as the previous owner left a screw on right angle valve in a fairing pocket. On the 1100 I bend the longer ones over when checking the air and haven't had one fail yet. The tyre had ran most of 2600km without a leak so that put paid to a faulty tyre and rim seal leaving an object in the tread pattern the most probable cause.

Pumped the tyre for the soapy water test.

Went over the whole tyre, checked valve stem and tyre to rim seal and came up with a tiny piece of metal or nail in thread. Could have been there for ages and just riding around would have slowly driven it deeper until the tyre leaked.

Put the sealant in the tyre and rotated the wheel so the hole was at the bottom and let it sit for awhile. The leak had slowed a little when I took this photo.

Started the bike for a warm up and let the tyre sit for a little longer while I cleaned up the mess in Tammie's garage and when done spun the rear wheel with motor on idle. It was a good test for the side stand switch as the motor cut out when I put it in gear; 12 years the with an 1100A and I still forget sometimes.

Looked all good and no more leaking evident I managed to turn the bike around going a 6 point U turn and rode her ("Wildfire" says Heather) home.

Will check it gain tomorrow morning to see the leak was fixed.

Looking at the tyre I'd say it was a little worse for wear but a new tyre going on in a few weeks time as the 1100 will be out of rego until I need to tow the trailer in October.

After what appeared to be a success turned into a failure.

Tyre was flat again today.

Found enough cash for a new tyre so a ride over to Port Augusta on Thursday to have it fitted. Either a Roadsmart 3 or a T30R as they have to order one in.

Why not plug it?
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Might be a good idea to put in a 90 degree valve stem when the tyre is changed. I did and it makes life so much easier when checking and topping up tyres.

I do have a couple of screw on valves but most of the time I don't bother.

Bit different on the 1300 rear as there seems less room between the valve and the hub than on the 1100.

I'll see what Northern Motorcycles at Port Augusta have on hand when I go over on Thursday.

I got a flat rear tyre which had ride on tyre sealer in it
It was only a small hole which I couldn't find till I pumped air into it
The sealant was everywhere but didn't seal
I contacted Brendan who didn't care and just told me it doesn't always work
So much for after sale service  :cuss

Seems that you should be due a refund, as the product was not fit for purpose..

I could see the sealant coming out and  I let it sit until it seemed solid but riding the bike back home must have upset it.

I don't know why but I got another delivery of the sealant yesterday; 4 bottles for the price of two.

As I said before- why not put a plug in the hole?

The offending item if you have a look at the image is located in one of the little tread impressions and flush with the tyre. Apart from that I have nothing to either remove it with or push it in further.

Other than that the tyre is down to the tread depth markers on that side of the tyre and would need to be replaced soon anyway. Especially when winter has just reminded us that it's not done with us yet.

:blu13 regarding ride on sealant. From tyre guru at Brendale Tyre Warehouse "ride on causes electrolization (right word???) And starts pitting the rim," thus causing leaky places, evidence on my last tyre change, he cleaned it with water and soap and then showed me why my tyre pressure's were low every week. SO now no more ride on for me. For my birthday Shiney gave me a tyre repair kit with little cylinders to inflate tyre after repair :thumb :blu13left

Normally I don't use anything either and it was essentially a waste of cash. Not to worry as I was sent an extra lot for some unknown reason so I might sell it or keep for the trailer when it needs new tyre/tubes.

Dont use the little cylinders, it will take 4 or more just to do the front tyre, get a small comressor that you can connect to the battery.

:blu13 I went through same thing and ended up with a bag of (4) being delivered, then found that the nail hit the wire in the tire and traveled at an angle, so no stopping the leak. Had to buy Shiney's tyres LOL Wot thuh so I have spares also.. :blu13left
